The primary objective of AeroCom meetings is to share and participate in efforts
to untangle the complexity in bottom-up aerosol component modules
in global modeling. Better process understanding is addressed through either
common experiments with harmonized input, assumptions and parameterizations
or data constraints from observations. The data aspect is also the major reason
to co-locate AeroCom and AeroSAT for exchange on data potential and data needs.

- state of Aerosol Forcing 2010-1850 (what is anthropognic? what in natural?)
- history of aerosol forcing (transient simulation comparisons) AeroCom/AerChemMIP output
- how do models simulated natural aerosol (dust and seasalt components have large diversities!)
- indirect forcing and obs constraints (e.g. what we learn from volc cases or satellite statis.)
- evaluations to observations (sat data / ground / planes) ? (consistency in anomalies/trends ?)
- unsolved issues (for phase IV?) : water uptake / size / natural aerosol / transport via tracers?
The primary purpose of the AeroSAT meeting is to assess the state-of-the-art
of satellite aerosol retrievals and products, brainstorm ideas, and develop
consensus as much as possible. AeroSAT is designed as a meeting of experts.
So, as is our practice, the meeting format
will feature brief overview talks on key issues, occasional updates on specific
new developments, chairperson-presented
discussion points, and ample time for discussion.

- new elements/opportunities in/from remote sensing
- climate data records (are they useful/accurate enough? for AeroCom? how can they be improved?)
- pixel uncertainty (have they helped in data assimilations?)
- aerosol typing (can we agree on definitions? on quantitative (optics?) measures? interpretive enough for forward and inverse modeling?)
- aerosol indirect effects (how best to use satellite data relationships to constrain aerosol-cloud interaction processes and modeling?)
- AeroSAT experiments
- best practices for gridded level 3 data
The initial four days (MO-TH) of the week address AeroCom topics.
including a half-day joint session with topics
related to both AeroCom and AeroSAT
The last two days (FR-SA) of the meeting focus on AeroSAT topics.
AeroSAT has a focus on open discussions; thus presentations on individual scientific work
are deferred to poster-presentations.
Few oral seed presentations at the start of each session are by invitation
- to provide a broader overview
- to introduce new appraoches and
- to stimulate subsequent discussions on related issues and challenges
